Case Study

Sainsbury Exhibition Gallery at The British Museum

Lazenby’s Black polished concrete floor installed over 1100m² in the Sainsbury Exhibition Gallery at The British Museum in 2013. This upper level was designed by RSH+P for the conservation of the museum’s collection, from wooden canoes and totem poles to coin collections and archeological fragments. This dedicated space was part of the £135 million World Conservation and Exhibition Centre wing, which is the largest redevelopment project in the British Museum’s 260-year history.

Project detail

Lazenby’s Black polished concrete included 36 carefully planned service boxes, elegant joint plan grid, essential non-slip finish and partition walling glide rails. The service boxes were specially designed as circular rather than square to help reduce the risk of cracking. Installed in 10 separate pours, this 100mm deep floor was laid over A252 reinforcing mesh. The C28/35 concrete, to BS EN 206-1 and BS 8500-2, has GGBS/cement substitutes to help with BREAM certification. A team of 8 Lazenby master craftsmen made the first square metre look like the last 1100th square metre.
