Although a distinctively modern intervention in this leafy urban conservation area of Westminster, planning permission was granted on the grounds that the design is a stark contrast in architectural form to its traditional neighbours, and the quality of the detailing and materials ensures that the building coexists happily in this urban context. A discreet door in a side wall off a quiet side street provides the entrance to this extraordinary one bedroom house. An unassuming Victorian coach house built of London stock brick with exposed timber trusses has been retained and restored to provide a bedroom suite while the rest of the house has been newly built.

So much thought, intelligence and passion is here. I loved coming across unexpected vistas at the perimeter and the way I could nip outside so easily and so often. I also enjoyed the play on different scales as you pass from the industrial soaring spaces into the intimate more domestic rooms. And such delight from the brick wall that opens to reveal a bedroom, the television that can be wound up by a handle to another floor and the glass wall that pivots into a portico to a garden beyond….it’s so inventive and quite magical. But as well as these qualities and perhaps most of all, is that it is a happy, comfortable and fun home. John Pawson
